BOSTON April 17, 2004--Two Emerson College department chairs resigned their posts recently amid the strong discord of negotiations between the administration and faculty. The resignations of Philip Glenn, Chair of the Organizational and Political Communication Department, and Marye Tharp, Chair of the Marketing and Health Communication Department, follow the departure of three Chief Academic Officers (CAO’s) within recent years. The CAO’s who resigned were, in reverse order, Dorothy Aram, Murray Schwartz and Philip Amato.
“It is evident that President Liebergott’s contempt for the faculty and for the college’s academic mission is having an extraordinary effect on our ability as an institution to attract and retain quality personnel,” said Eiki Satake, President of the Emerson College Chapter of the American Association of University Professors (ECCAAUP). “We either need a dramatic turn of events in the way the college is managed or we need a change in leadership.”
In addition to an emphasis on economics over academics in the last several years, the administration has shown a grave disrespect for the faculty and for the role they play in preserving the college’s academic integrity. Since negotiations between the administration and the faculty began in September of 2003, the administration has threatened to limit the faculty’s role in the governance of academic affairs unless they disband the union and has chosen to negotiate only through its attorneys.
Moreover, the administration has continued to offer extremely rigid and increasingly dictatorial proposals. One such article proposed by the administration would restrict any professional or charitable work performed by faculty outside of the college unless given written permission by the administration. Another article would restrict the freedom of speech of faculty by preventing them from picketing, passing out handbills or expressing sympathy for other organized labor activity.
“It is regrettable that Emerson is losing such talented department chairs,” added Satake. “We hope that the administration will see the unintended consequences of their actions before more faculty follow suit.”
During the negotiation period both the faculty union and the faculty assembly have taken strong votes of no confidence in College President Jacqueline Liebergott and Vice President for Administration and Finance Robert Silverman. The current five-year contract between the ECCAAUP and the College expires on June 30, 2004.

LOS ANGELES, CA April 20, 2004--Designer Barclay Butera, ASID, brings to Spring’s High Point Market his latest vision of ‘fashion for the home’ through his 100% customized Butera Home Furnishings (BHF) line, distributed in approximately 300 locations nationwide. Located at IHFC Interhall H106, Butera continues to evolve and grow his upholstery line, always adding a fresh take on the casually elegant lifestyle and high-end quality his clients have come to expect.
As a clothing designer observes a variety of cultures and historical styles, and tries to predict people’s new needs, so Barclay finds that he views design. He encourages his clients to keep and integrate their personal, classic, heritage pieces…as with an ideal wardrobe. And, being drawn to fashion – and tapping his own travels and experiences – there is constant inspiration for his classic, lifestyle approach to interior design. He looks to the tailoring of men’s suits and women’s clothing; the banding; and combinations of fabrics, textures, patterns, and colors. Fall 2003 brought the pink Renee Loveseat, inspired by the fashions he saw in Paris and in the film “Down With Love”; Spring brings The Gramercy, The Grant and The Hudson chairs.
Spending time this year in Palm Springs, CA, he has felt transported to an era in which people dressed for cocktail parties they hosted in their sophisticated (but livable) homes, and were more light-hearted; for Barclay, this conjures scenes from Cary Grant and Bette Davis films, as well as specifically “Auntie Mame” and “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”. These films and their fashion evoked a refined, tailored elegance, with an inescapable casual side.
Butera Home Furnishings is proud to introduce at the High Point Market, the following:
- The Gramercy Chair: A simplified retro-modern silhouetted armless chair, presented in spice linen with tapered wooden legs. Its tufted loose back, along with the vibrant burnt orange color, evinces a chic 1960s feel. As with all BHF pieces, the Gramercy comes standard with the goose down and feather wrap seat with center fiber core, and solid goose down and feather back. (28”x36”x27”)
- The Grant Wing Chair: Named for the debonair and sophisticated Cary Grant, this classically-lined, high wing back chair features antique style rolled arms and a fine tapered, dark wood bracket base. The Grant is displayed in rich-chocolate mohair that provides a comfortable, elegant and nostalgic aura, yet with nickel nailheads that give it a modern twist. (33”x31”x45”)
- The Hudson Chair: Still traditional but hip, both masculine and feminine, the tailored Hudson is a high backed wing chair featuring flat-topped arms with a rolled front. It is shown with a full-length kick pleat flounce to the floor that follows the line of the flared legs underneath. (32”x27”x44”, COM)
In addition, the Doheny Sofa, Mulholland Sofa and Grant Sofa will be shown prominently at Spring Market – all named for old Los Angeles/Hollywood icons; as well as the Carmel Ottoman.
The era of films referred to showed people spending time in and enjoying their homes, which is happening more again today – hence, the increased interest in design. Muses Barclay, “People are intrigued by others’ choices of interiors, and that becomes the topic of conversation. I try to focus on how I can help create an elegant yet livable haven for and with my customers.”
Butera Home Furnishings (BHF) is the wholesale division of Barclay Butera, Inc.(BBI), an 11-year old corporation, based in Newport Beach. BBI is home to Barclay Butera, the retail division that maintains retail/wholesale showrooms in Newport Beach and Los Angeles, CA, and Park City, UT; and to Barclay Home, a new line of furnishings exclusively to-the-trade, designed and manufactured by Butera,. BHF maintains wholesale showrooms in High Point, NC, and Atlanta, GA, and a manufacturing plant in Los Angeles, CA.
